Town moving forward with Building Georgina projects

There may be a lot of snow on the ground, however, progress is being made on many Town projects to start in the spring. These projects, part of Building Georgina, include High Street Infrastructure and Streetscaping Improvements, Lake Drive Improvements – Phase 1, 2025 Road Repairs program, and Replacement of the Old Shiloh Road Bridge.

High Street Infrastructure and Streetscaping Improvements

This improvement project will enhance the streetscape and upgrade underground infrastructure on High Street in Sutton. The project will upgrade and modernize the local road, stormwater and water supply infrastructure to meet current standards and achieve the required service levels for the long term.

The Town is organizing a series of workshops where key stakeholders will be invited to review and discuss elements of the project’s design and explore ways to minimize the disruptions that go along with major construction. Following the design workshops, a public open house will be held to share information on the streetscape and infrastructure design concepts with a wider audience. Next steps include finalizing a business disruption mitigation plan and incorporating stakeholder feedback into both pre-design and detailed design phases. With construction targeted to begin in 2026, the project is expected to be substantially complete in 2027. Learn more at georgina.ca/HighStreet

Lake Drive Improvements – Phase 1

The Lake Drive Improvements Project – Phase 1 will transform how this popular stretch of road is experienced. The first seasonal conversion is planned to be ready and functional for summer 2025. The project includes a new multi-use pathway on Lake Drive East from Civic Centre Road to Dalton Road, offering a safer and more enjoyable space for all. The north lane closest to Lake Simcoe will feature a multi-use pathway, perfect for walking, recreational cycling and enjoying the scenic views. The south lane will be a one-way eastbound vehicular lane. Several traffic calming implements and new pedestrian crossings will be added, making it easier to safely connect to the beach and enjoy the lakefront. In early fall, Lake Drive will be converted back to its current two-lane, two-way configuration. Procurement for construction of the first phase of improvements to Lake Drive is now under way. Learn more at georgina.ca/LakeDrive.

2025 Road repairs program

The list of road repairs that are to be completed in 2025 is being finalized and the Town’s contractor has been directed to begin work as soon as weather permits. Notices of disruption will be provided to homes and businesses on roads that will be affected by construction.  The planned repairs for road segments will soon be updated on the construction map on the Town’s website.

Replacement of the Old Shiloh Road Bridge

The Town is moving forward to select a design-build contractor to undertake replacement of the Old Shiloh Road Bridge. Beginning with a Request for Pre-Qualification, firms/consortia are invited to provide information demonstrating their experience and qualifications completing detailed design and construction of bridges like the Old Shiloh Road Bridge. Following completion of the pre-qualification process, detailed competitive proposals to complete the engineering and construction work will be submitted by those pre-qualified. Pre-engineering site investigations for the design of the new bridge are planned to take place in 2025. Construction work for replacement of the bridge is expected to start in early 2026 and anticipated to take up to two years to complete. Learn more at georgina.ca/OldShilohBridge.
