A new pump track and skate park in Pefferlaw is one step closer to reality after Georgina Council approved the award of contract to New Line Skateparks Inc. for the new amenity to be located on the grounds of Pefferlaw Park at 38 Pete’s Lane. It’s one of a number of new outdoor amenities for the community as a result of the Pefferlaw Recreation Needs Study done in 2021.
“As a growing community, we are committed to providing opportunities for people to enjoy the outdoors and have an active lifestyle,” said Mayor Margaret Quirk. “The Pefferlaw Recreation Needs Study showed us what the community wanted for families, and in particular, for young people. This new pump track and skate park will be a welcome addition to Pefferlaw Park and will provide exciting new recreational opportunities for all.”
Skateboarding and BMX bikes have become increasingly popular, and skateboard and pump parks are places where people can pursue those interests. Pefferlaw Park is an ideal location for the pump track and skate park as it is centrally located, highly visible and is frequently visited by young people. The Town will work with New Line Skateparks Inc. to ensure a variety of skill-level features are incorporated into the design to encourage people who are new to the sport or advanced to use this facility.
Engagement is a critical component of this project. There will be online and in-person engagement opportunities, with a focus on encouraging youth input on the design. Feedback received will be incorporated into the design of the pump track and skate park to ensure it meets the needs of the community.
The Town is also in the final stages of building an outdoor sports zone on the Pefferlaw Ice Pad (PIP) for use outside of the winter season. This year will also see the creation of a community garden and improvements and enhancements to the existing pedestrian trails and park amenities, including a new walking loop with exercise stations.
