Celebrating 50th anniversary with a new name – Georgina Village Museum

The Town of Georgina is announcing a new name for Georgina Pioneer Village as it marks its 50th anniversary in 2025 – to Georgina Village Museum.

For 50 years, Georgina Pioneer Village has served our community as a place where the past comes alive, stories are preserved and generations connect,” said Mayor Margaret Quirk. “The new name, Georgina Village Museum, will position the village as a modern, vibrant and inclusive historical resource through its new identity. The village celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, marking five decades of educational programs, community events and historical preservation. This milestone underscores the village's role as a cornerstone of local heritage in Georgina.”

Since its official opening on Sept. 14, 1975, Georgina Village Museum has been a destination for residents and visitors alike, offering heritage camps, guided tours, workshops, special events and educational programming. The village buildings and structures were relocated to this property to form a collective representation of aspects of the built heritage of the Town. The archives house an extensive collection of historical records and personal family documents, fostering a deep connection to the community’s past.

The village is working towards a more inclusive view to storytelling to ensure the full rich heritage of the community shines through. The term “pioneer,” while historically associated with early settlers, now carries complex connotations that may not fully reflect the diverse histories and perspectives of the community. This name change aligns with the direction of other Ontario museums such as the Village at Black Creek (formerly Black Creek Pioneer Village) and opens the doors for more cultural partnerships, exhibits and programming. By transitioning to Georgina Village Museum, it reaffirms the Town’s commitment to fostering an inclusive, engaging and forward-thinking environment while continuing to celebrate and preserve Georgina’s rich heritage.

In addition to the name change, the logo for Georgina Village Museum was also updated. During the process of creating a new logo, the Georgina Historical Society was consulted and a new logo was created featuring a silhouette of the Noble House, one of the most recognizable and historically significant structures on the site.
