Heat warning in effect for Georgina

The heat is on. Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for Georgina and all of York Region. A prolonged heat event will begin today. Dangerously hot and humid conditions are expected through most of the week. Daytime highs through much of the week are expected to be 30 to 35 degrees Celsius with humidex values of 40 to 45.

Hot and humid air can also bring deteriorating air quality and can result in the Air Quality Health Index approaching the high-risk category. The risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors.

Never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle.

High temperatures, high humidity, lack of shade and minimal air movement – both indoors and outdoors – can put your health at risk, causing heat-related illnesses. Visit York Region’s website for tips from public health on how to prevent heat-related illness.

Town facilities are available for cooling relief during regular business hours.

Georgina’s four splash pads – the ROC, Const. Garrett Styles Park, Whipper Watson Park and Julia Munro Park – are open daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Local beaches and parks are another great way to cool off.

Check Environment Canada’s website for information on your local forecast and weather alerts.
