Shoreline hazard watch

The Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority advises that temperatures are forecast to rise today with daytime highs of 9 Celsius to 16 Celsius over the weekend and through early next week. Approximately 1mm of rainfall is forecast for overnight and an additional 5-10 mm next Tuesday.

The current wind forecast indicates south winds today in a range of 13-17 km/hr with wind gusts up to 29 km/hr. The forecast for the next few days ranges from 14-20 km/hr winds with gusts of up to 30 km/hr.

This combined with recent rainfall, warm temperatures and high winds is posing a risk for ice movement and breakup along the Lake Simcoe shoreline.

Recent ice pileups have been reported along the west shoreline of Georgina Island.

Lake Simcoe Water Level

The water levels in Lake Simcoe are slightly above average for this time of year and may increase in response to the precipitation and inflows from rivers and streams within the system. Currently the lake level is approximately 5 centimetres higher than average for this time of year.

Water Safety

Exercise extreme caution around all bodies of water. Alert any children under your care to stay away from all watercourses and other bodies of water, and supervise their activities.

Residents, especially in the historically flood prone areas, are advised to take necessary precautions to protect themselves, their pets and their property.

This Shoreline Hazard Watch will be in effect through Friday March 8, 2024, or until otherwise updated.
