Improving local health and wellness

The Town, Southlake and the Northern York South Simcoe Ontario Health Team have been working to advance the components of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed in June 2024. This includes but is not limited to, progress on the development of a new bricks and mortar healthcare facility, the opening of a Pediatric Urgent Care Clinic in Keswick, submission of an Expression of Interest (EOI) to the Province for MRI/CT and endoscopy services and engagement with the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation, Hospice Georgina, Health Georgina, etc. A formal update will be presented to Council toward the end of 2024.

Safe Streets Monitoring Program

In an effort to improve road safety, the Town has developed a Safe Streets Policy which includes automated speed enforcement (ASE) cameras as one of the approaches to improve speed compliance on Town roads. The Safe Streets Monitoring Program will use ASE cameras with the goal of encouraging posted speed limit compliance and increasing overall safety for the community. Before the cameras are installed, “coming soon” signs will be installed 90 days in advance to warn, remind and educate the public to drive within the posted speed limit. Five cameras will be installed – one in each ward – in Community Safety Zones. The purpose of Community Safety Zones is to warn drivers they are entering an area where public safety is of special concern. Signage and pavement markings advise drivers they are entering the community safety zone and help encourage them to drive the posted speed limit and be more aware of their surroundings.

2025 Budget

The Town is developing the 2025 budget with a focus on enhancing transparency, accountability and continuous service improvement. The budget, which includes an operating budget and capital investments, builds on the priorities identified in the 2023-2027 Strategic Plan. Council budget deliberations take place on Dec. 3 and Dec. 4, 2024.

Winter Weather event

Did you know that a municipality can declare a significant weather event when a weather hazard, either forecast or occurring, has the potential to pose a significant danger to users of the roads? This declaration suspends the standard timelines and gives municipalities additional time to clear the roads. This is different from a winter maintenance event which requires parked vehicles to be removed from Town roads to allow crews to clear the snow.

Winter reminders

Plow tracker

If you want to know where Betty Whiteout or Austin Plower are, be sure to check the Town's online winter operations tracker. It allows you to see where the snowplows and sidewalk plows are during snow clearing. Check out our online plow tracker to see which plow will be in your area after a snowfall. Reminder: Winter parking restrictions are in effect until April 15, meaning no parking between the hours of 2 a.m. and 7 a.m.

Stormwater ponds

No ice is safe ice. A reminder for the winter months that stormwater ponds are not for recreational use. Despite their appearance, they're not safe for skating, walking or any winter activity. The ice is unstable and water levels can change rapidly creating unsafe conditions. This is extremely dangerous and poses many safety risks for residents.

Pefferlaw Ice Pad (PIP)

Lace up your skates this winter. The Pefferlaw Ice Pad (PIP) is an outdoor skating facility open during the winter months. This is an unsupervised ice pad – use at own risk. Before visiting, review the rules of etiquette of play and follow the daily schedule.

Tax and water portal

Replacement Civic Centre update

The Replacement Civic Centre project is progressing well. The structural steel is being erected and will be completed by the end of December. This includes the roof deck along with sufficient roofing membrane to provide for a waterproof seal above the two-story section of the building to allow for dry working conditions below. The exterior of the two-story wing of the building, if not the entire building, will be enclosed to allow for heating during the winter months so that interior work can continue throughout. The Replacement Civic Centre project is on schedule to be substantially complete along with all exterior landscaping by the end of 2025. Demolition of the existing Civic Centre, along with all hard and soft landscaping, is scheduled to take place between January and June 2026.

Waste and Recycling reminders

Christmas tree pickup is the week of Jan. 6, 2025. Residents are asked to remove decorations, nails, tree stands and plastic tree bags. The maximum size is six feet or 1.8 metres. If the tree is larger, cut it into pieces.

Place blue boxes, green bins, and waste on your driveway, not on the road or on top of or behind snowbanks.
