The Town of Georgina is declaring a Significant Weather Event, due to the winter storm warning that is in effect.
As per the Ontario Municipal Act, a municipality may declare a significant weather event when a weather hazard, either forecast or occurring, has the potential to pose a significant danger to users of the roadways in which they have authority. This declaration suspends the standard timelines required for municipalities to meet their winter maintenance objectives.
A few reminders for residents –
The Town of Georgina is moving forward with building a replacement Civic Centre with an updated total project budget of $50 million. Council approved the 44,600-square-foot building which will provide for the Town’s staffing and public needs today and in the future. It will also be designed with a focus on energy efficiency and sustainability.
The next virtual Council meeting is Wednesday, March 1 at 9 a.m. Council will receive a report on the replacement Civic Centre. For additional information, including FAQ’s on the replacement Civic Centre, visit georgina.ca/CivicCentre.
Sidewalk plowing continues to present challenges this winter in the absence of frozen ground. Operators are vigilant in the absence of markers or existing windrows from previous storms, however, damages do occur and are more frequent with unfrozen ground.
Damage to Town sod, pavement and Town-owned trees will be repaired in the spring.
The Towns of Georgina and East Gwillimbury announced a joint fire services assessment in 2022 which included an update to both municipal Fire Master Plans, options for service efficiencies, and a review of the potential to consolidate the two departments. The study included extensive stakeholder engagement and concluded that both communities are well served by their existing fire and emergency services departments.

Fence Viewers
When neighbours cannot agree on the construction, reconstruction or maintenance of a fence, the Line Fences Act governs the arbitration process if necessary. This provincial law allows for three municipally appointed fence viewers to examine the land in question and hear submissions from the adjoining owners and/or their witnesses.
The Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority advises that warmer weather accompanied by rainfall is expected to begin to move through the watershed on Thursday, Feb. 9.
