Adoption requests are considered for stray pets after the five- business day redemption period has concluded. The redemption period does not include Sundays, statutory holidays or any day in which the shelter is closed to the public. The shelter's first priority is always to reunite lost pets with their families.

The unseen heroes: overlooked pets deserving a forever home

When we think of adopting pets, energetic puppies and playful kittens often come to mind. However, there is a vast, often overlooked group of animals waiting for their chance at a forever home: special needs and senior pets. These animals may not fit the stereotypical mold of a pet, but they possess an abundance of love and loyalty that can enrich your life in ways you never imagined.

Special Needs Pets: Unique Companions with Extra Love

Special needs pets include those with physical disabilities, chronic illnesses, or behavioural challenges. These animals might require extra care, such as daily medication, specific diets, or specialized training. While this may seem daunting at first, the rewards are immeasurable. Adopting a special needs pet teaches compassion, patience, and resilience. Moreover, these pets often form profound bonds with their owners, offering a level of loyalty and gratitude that is truly heartwarming. Organizations and veterinary professionals provide ample resources and support, ensuring that you and your special needs pet can thrive together.

Senior Pets: The Wisdom of Age

Senior pets are another group that frequently gets overlooked in shelters. These older animals, often surrendered due to their owners' life changes, still have so much love to give. Adopting a senior pet comes with its unique set of advantages. These animals are typically calmer, well-trained, and past the destructive phase of their youth. They make excellent companions for individuals looking for a more relaxed and steady relationship. Additionally, senior pets are incredibly appreciative of the comfort and warmth of a loving home, often showing their gratitude in the most endearing ways.

The Impact of Giving a Second Chance

Bringing home a special needs or senior pet is not just an act of kindness; it's an opportunity to change two lives – theirs and yours. These animals often face longer waits in shelters, where they might not receive the individualized attention they need. By adopting one, you are not only providing them with a second chance but also freeing up resources for other animals in need. The sense of fulfilment and joy that comes from seeing a once-overlooked pet flourish under your care is unparalleled.

In conclusion, while puppies and kittens are undeniably adorable, special needs and senior pets offer an extraordinary kind of companionship. If you're considering adoption, take a moment to look beyond the young and the healthy. The perfect pet for you might just be one who has been waiting the longest. Embrace the opportunity to make a real difference in an animal's life and experience the unique and profound bond that comes with adopting an overlooked pet.
