Be green and smoke-free

The Town of Georgina has been smoke-free since Oct. 9, 2012.  This Bylaw was implemented to further the efforts of the York Region No-Smoking Bylaw and Smoke-Free Ontario Act (SFOA), to protect the public and de-normalize smoking, due to its negative environmental and health effects.

The bylaw prohibits smoking, holding lighted tobacco, chewing tobacco or using tobacco products on all Town of Georgina properties and facilities*.

This includes all:

  • Recreation centres and Town buildings (arenas, Town halls, libraries, police stations, fire stations, operation centres, senior centres, tourism centres, animal shelters, etc.)
  • Parks
  • Playgrounds
  • Playing fields (soccer pitches, baseball diamonds, beach volleyball, tennis courts and outdoor ice rinks)
  • Skateboard parks
  • Ropes and bicycle courses
  • Tube/toboggan and terrain area
  • Splash pads and pools
  • Trails and pathways
  • Parking lots and municipal laneways
  • Beaches and waterfronts
  • Green spaces

If caught breaking the bylaw the penalty is a minimum fine of $100 and a maximum fine of $100,000.
*Except in locations where a designated smoking area sign is posted.

Strive to be smoke-free

  • Smoking is the No. 1 preventable cause of death in Canada.
  • Smoking kills more than 37,000 Canadians each year.
  • Tobacco use is also linked to cancer of the bladder, kidney, pancreas, cervix, mouth, throat, esophagus, larynx, stomach, colon, rectum and breast.

Here are some helpful links to help you become smoke-free.

Let’s keep Georgina clean

Smoking is not only bad for you, but it also harms our air, water, animals and plants. Cigarette butts are the most littered item in the world and are very costly to clean up.  Do your part and put your butts where they belong.
