Public Water Taps

Overview

The Town of Georgina operates two public water taps for residential use. The first tap is located 100m East of Park Road, on Black River Road.

Notice: This location is temporarily reopening as of Dec. 15, 2023.

A new second permanent public water tap has been opened at the Sutton Arena (48 Hawkins St., Sutton), just south of the main doors.

Residential public water taps are intended for small-volume users and are not outfitted for large-volume dispensing. This tap location monitored by staff and security cameras.

History

The Town of Georgina closed three of its four public water taps the week of Oct. 18, 2021. The taps were closed due to concerns related to potential backflow and contamination from commercial users who are not permitted to use the taps. Both residents and staff have reported concerns. The taps were unmetered and uncontrolled, and there was potential for contamination of the system through backflow of non-potable water, a public safety concern.  See the documents below outlining the various reports to local Council.

Frequently asked questions

When will the Black River Road location reopen?

It is anticipated this location will reopen on December 15th, 2023 for the winter period. The location will be temporarily closed for final upgrades in Spring of 2024.

What upgrades are being completed?

The Black River Road location will be updated with an upgraded enclosure, new parking locations, upgraded taps at various heights, new lighting and security features.

What is the plan for all existing taps?

One new location has been approved and is now open at Sutton Arena.

Black River Road location will be temporarily closed while upgrades are made to the site, then it will re-open.

Boyers Road has potential to be re-opened, dependent upon a report back to Council.

High Street and Kennedy Road are permanently closed.

Why is there a delay in upgrading the Black River Road location?

Initially, the project was to move forward independent of any other work within the Town. A reconstruction project is occurring on Black River Road, which includes culvert upgrades and resurfacing in front of the tap. In order to have one seamless end result, the external works associated with the Black River Tap will be embedded into that reconstruction project. This will reduce disruption and avoid duplicate costs. This is anticipated to be completed by summer of 2024.

Where can I get water during these disruptions?

The tap at the Sutton Arena remains open throughout the Black River Road upgrades.
